iPhone SE prices in Kenya
- SE 2022 (3rd generation): about KSh 47,000 for 64GB, KSh 60,000 for 128GB and KSh 79,000 for 256GB at one retailer. Others differ.
- SE 2020 (2nd generation): about KSh 52,700 for 64GB and KSh 58,300 for 128GB, from listings marked out of stock.
- SE 2016 (1st generation): we did not find reliable current prices. It came in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB versions.
How to tell them apart
- SE 2016: tiny 4-inch screen, A9 chip. Looks like an iPhone 5s. Stopped at iOS 15.
- SE 2020: 4.7-inch screen, A13 chip, no 5G. Looks like an iPhone 8.
- SE 2022: same look as the 2020, A15 chip and 5G. "SE 3" also refers to this one.

Is it a good deal?
The SE 2022 has a very capable chip, but a small screen, one rear camera and a small battery. At these prices, compare it carefully against a bigger Ex-UK phone:
| Model | Condition | From | Stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 13 | Ex-UK (Refurbished) | KSh 62,000 | In stock |
| iPhone 12 Pro | Ex-UK (Refurbished) | KSh 62,000 | In stock |
| iPhone 13 Pro | Ex-UK (Refurbished) | KSh 75,000 | In stock |
If you love the small size and Home button, an SE 2020 or 2022 is the only choice that still gets iOS updates. If not, the iPhone 13 gives you a larger OLED display and a dual camera.
Storage sizes
The SE 2020 and SE 2022 came in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. Avoid 64GB if you can, since it fills quickly. The price difference between sizes can be large, so compare it with the cost of a bigger phone.
Who should buy an iPhone SE?
The SE suits people who want a small phone, a Home button and Touch ID, or who prefer not to use Face ID. It also works well for anyone who mostly uses WhatsApp and calls. It is not a great choice if you watch a lot of video or take many low-light photos, because of the small LCD screen and single camera.
Which is best value?
If you find both at similar prices, choose the SE 2022 for its faster chip, 5G and better battery life. Avoid the original 2016 SE unless you specifically want a tiny phone, because it no longer gets new iOS versions and some apps may stop working on it.
