Buying an iPhone on instalments in Kenya: what it really costs

Paying in small amounts makes an expensive iPhone feel reachable, but the total you pay can be far above the cash price. Here is how to compare the options. Terms change often, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with each provider.
We do not currently advertise an instalment plan. Our listed prices are for paying in full at our shop.
The main ways to pay in instalments in Kenya
- Safaricom Lipa Mdogo Mdogo: daily payments on selected phones through Safaricom. Eligibility depends on your line and history with them.
- M-KOPA: a deposit followed by small daily payments, sold through its agents and shops. Its range of phones is limited.
- Dealer "Lipa Pole Pole" plans: some phone shops offer their own plans. Terms vary a lot. Some charge interest, while others claim to charge none.
- Bank or SACCO loans: you borrow the money and pay the shop in full, so your interest rate is what matters.
Work out the true cost first
Before you sign, ask for these numbers in writing and do the sum:
- Deposit
- Daily or monthly payment
- Number of payments
- Any fees, and what happens if you miss a payment
Total cost = deposit + (payment × number of payments) + fees. Then compare that total with the cash price. An iPhone 13 costs KSh 62,000 at our shop, so any plan for the same phone should be measured against that number.
Questions to ask
- Will the phone be locked if I am late? After how many days?
- Is my SIM or M-Pesa line tied to the plan?
- Who owns the phone until the last payment?
- Can I pay it off early, and does that reduce the cost?
- What happens if the phone is lost, stolen or faulty?
Alternatives to consider
Saving up for a few months can cost far less than interest, especially if you buy an Ex-UK phone instead of a new one. An Ex-UK iPhone 12 Pro at KSh 62,000 may be within reach sooner than you think. See our cheapest iPhone guide.
