Refurbished, Ex-UK and second-hand iPhones in Kenya

Ex-UK, refurbished, used, second hand: Kenyan sellers use these words loosely. They are not the same thing, and the difference can be worth thousands of shillings.
What the words usually mean
- Brand New: sealed in the original box and never used.
- Ex-UK: a pre-owned phone imported from the UK and resold here. The condition varies from phone to phone.
- Refurbished: a used phone that has been checked or repaired. Ask who did the work and which parts were changed.
- Second hand or used: bought from a previous owner, often on a marketplace, with little or no checking.
- Apple Certified Refurbished: restored by Apple itself. Do not assume a phone in Kenya is this unless the seller can prove it.

Your checklist before paying
Run through this on any used iPhone, including ours:
- Battery: open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health.
- Parts and service history: in Settings, General, About, newer iPhones show whether the screen, battery or camera has been replaced.
- Activation lock: the seller must sign out of iCloud and erase the phone in front of you.
- IMEI: dial *#06# and check that it matches Settings and the box, if there is one.
- Face ID or Touch ID, cameras, speakers and charging port: test each one, then make a call and test mobile data with your own SIM.
- Water damage or dents: look closely at the frame and around the camera.
Is Ex-UK worth it?
For most budgets, yes, if you can inspect the phone. An Ex-UK iPhone 14 Pro at KSh 88,000 gives you the Dynamic Island and a 48MP camera for far less than a new iPhone 17 Pro at KSh 170,000. Choose Brand New if you want the full battery life and the longest support.
Frequently asked questions
What does Ex-UK mean for an iPhone in Kenya?
Ex-UK usually means a pre-owned iPhone imported from the UK and resold in Kenya. It is not a new phone. Condition varies by phone, so inspect it before paying.
Is a refurbished iPhone the same as Apple Certified Refurbished?
Usually not. In Kenya, "refurbished" normally means a used phone that a seller or workshop has checked or repaired, not one restored by Apple. Ask what was replaced.
What battery health should I accept?
There is no official minimum, but compare the percentage in Settings against the price. A lower reading means you may need a replacement sooner, so factor that cost in.
